Epic

Digital library of books, audiobooks, and videos for kids 12 and under.

Epic is a children’s reading library, not an AI tutor. Teachers can unlock a weekday school library for free. Families can subscribe for access at home.

Best for

A child who needs books at the right level more than they need a chatbot, through about age 12.

Epic School, when a teacher has set up a class, is free on weekdays from 7am to 4pm local time and includes about 20,000 books. Epic School Plus is a paid school product with 24/7 access and 40,000+ books. Epic Family is the parent subscription. The App Store describes a 7-day trial and up to 4 child profiles. A current dollar price was not on the pages we are willing to trust.

Teaches, or gives the answer?

Kids read books, use read-to-me titles, and can take quizzes. Epic does not solve homework problems.

Kid safety and privacy

Partly verified

Epic’s school pages say the school products are COPPA and FERPA compliant. The library is described as for ages 12 and under. We did not review a separate family-plan privacy policy in this pass.

What we could not verify

  • An Epic help article titled “How much does Epic Family cost?” is dated April 28, 2015 and lists $13.99 a month or $84.99 a year. That date is too old to treat as the current price.
  • School-hours access only exists if the child’s teacher uses Epic. It is not a free account every family can open on their own.
  • Age 12 does not cover all of 6th–8th grade.
