Grammarly

Writing assistant that edits and rewrites. Consumer accounts start at 13.

Grammarly checks grammar and can rewrite sentences. The free plan exists. Pro is a paid subscription. Grammarly’s terms say you have to be old enough to consent yourself, which in most of the U.S. means at least 13.

Best for

An older middle schooler, 13 or over, polishing their own draft — not a 3rd grader, and not a tool that should write the essay for them.

Pricing

Partly verified

Grammarly’s support article lists Pro at $30 a month, $60 for three months, or $144 a year ($12 a month on the annual plan). The free plan is $0. Grammarly’s support note says Grammarly is now part of Superhuman. The plans page we opened pushed a trial and did not restate every support-article price in the text we captured.

Teaches, or gives the answer?

Suggestions can teach a child to revise. Full-sentence rewrites can also replace the child’s writing. For a school essay, that second use is the problem.

Verified from public pages

The consumer terms say you may use Grammarly only if you are old enough to consent on your own — at least 13 under most U.S. law, 16 in the EU. Grammarly says it does not use personal information of people it knows are under 18 for targeted advertising. School deployments have a separate education agreement. This is not an under-13 product.

What we could not verify

  • Confirm the Pro price at checkout. The support article and the marketing page did not present the same level of detail.
  • A school can put younger students on Grammarly for Education under its own consent process. That is not the same as a parent downloading the consumer app for an elementary child.
