Reading apps for early readers (K-3)
Reviewed 2026-10-15 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.
“K–3” here means about kindergarten through 3rd grade. This directory files tools in bands (K–2, 3–5, 6–8), so a product can sit in K–2 without covering 3rd grade, or in 3–5 without covering kindergarten. The notes below stay inside what each public page actually said. None of these is an essay bot.
Free, and built for the first years of reading
- Duolingo ABC teaches phonics, handwriting, sight words, and stories. Duolingo says it is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. The grade range does not match across Duolingo’s own listings: Google Play says preschool through 1st grade, and the App Store says preschool through 2nd grade and also “Made for Ages 0–5.” It is a structured literacy app, not a generative chatbot, and it is a different app from the main Duolingo account.
- Khan Academy Kids is free for ages 2–8, which is preschool through about 2nd grade. It includes reading, books, and early math. The Play listing says it is COPPA-compliant. The dedicated kids privacy URL did not load during this review, so that claim rests on the store listing.
- Ello is the AI reading tutor in this set. It listens while a child reads, for ages 4–9 and about pre-K through grade 3. Daily activities are free to start. The current premium price was not published on the pages we read, so no dollar amount is listed. Ello says it complies with COPPA and asks for parental consent for some features, including voice.
A library, and two paid practice apps
- ABCmouse covers reading for ages 2–8. Basic Access is free and limited. Premium is paid. The help center lists $14.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and a marketing article has advertised a different first-year offer, so confirm the checkout screen. It is activities, not a chatbot.
- Epic is a book, audiobook, and video library for kids 12 and under, not an AI tutor. If a teacher has set up a class, Epic School is free on weekdays from 7am to 4pm local time. That school-hours access is not a free account every family can open alone. A current Epic Family dollar price was not on a page we are willing to treat as current. A 2015 help article is too old to use.
- SplashLearn is math and reading games for preschool through 5th grade, so it does cover K–3. It is paid after a 7-day trial. The help center does not list one dollar price, and the App Store shows several membership SKUs. The price at checkout is the one that counts.
What this list leaves out on purpose
IXL includes language arts from pre-K up, and it is paid skills practice, not a phonics story app. Quill and NoRedInk start around 3rd grade and are writing practice first. Kindergarten through 2nd grade is not a fit for either. Prodigy mentions an English game on its pricing page, but the grade range for that game was not spelled out, so reading is not tagged and it is not listed here as a reading app.
