Is my kid old enough? Age limits on popular homework apps

Reviewed 2026-10-15 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.

“Old enough” is not one number. Some products publish an age. Some publish a grade. Some only say that a child cannot open an account alone. The lines below are copied from the tool pages in this directory. They are not a legal opinion.

Built for young children

  • Khan Academy Kids: ages 2–8, about preschool through 2nd grade.
  • ABCmouse: ages 2–8.
  • Duolingo ABC: Play says preschool through 1st grade. The App Store says preschool through 2nd grade and also ages 0–5. Those listings disagree.
  • Ello: ages 4–9, about pre-K through grade 3. Not upper elementary or middle school.
  • SplashLearn: preschool through grade 5.
  • Synthesis Tutor: ages 5–11, grades K–5. Middle school is outside that range.
  • Beast Academy: ages 6–13, levels 1–5, for kids ready for harder math. A 6th–8th grader who has finished level 5 is pointed toward a different Art of Problem Solving product.

Elementary through middle school, with a floor

  • Prodigy math: grades 1–8. Kindergarten is not clearly covered. Science, on the membership page, covers grades 1–6.
  • Boddle: kindergarten through 6th grade, so not all of 6–8.
  • Zearn and DreamBox Math: kindergarten through 8th grade. DreamBox’s COPPA notice was not reviewed in this pass.
  • DeltaMath: about 4th grade through calculus. Not a K–2 product.
  • NoRedInk and Quill: from about 3rd grade up. Kindergarten through 2nd is not a fit.
  • Epic: kids 12 and under. Age 12 does not cover all of 6th–8th grade.
  • Khanmigo: adults 18 and older sign up. Children under 18 use it only through a parent or a district. Khan Academy says it can help from elementary school through college. A minimum grade inside elementary school was not stated.
  • IXL: pre-K through 12th grade. Children under 13 cannot create an account. A child profile sits on a parent account.

13 and up, or not a kids’ product

  • Brainly: at least 13 to create an account. The App Store rates it 13+. This is not a COPPA kids’ product for under-13s.
  • Grammarly: consumer terms require you to be old enough to consent on your own — at least 13 under most U.S. law, 16 in the EU. A school deployment is a different agreement, not the consumer app.
  • Quizlet: users under 13 sign up with a parent’s email, and a parent has to confirm. Younger accounts are limited. K–2 is left off. Q-Chat was not available under the age of consent even before it was retired in June 2025.
  • CK-12 Flexi: the page we read called out math grades 6, 7, and 8. Younger than 6th grade was not established. A children’s privacy notice for Flexi chats was not reviewed.
  • Google Lens and Mathway are not marketed as children’s products. Lens is not listed for K–2. Mathway’s K–2 grades are left off. Photomath supports elementary arithmetic, which is why young grades appear on its page, and it is still not presented as a little-kid product.

Open the tool page for the privacy note and the gaps. The early reading guide stays inside K–3. The house rules are the short version of what to do with a 13+ app.
