AI homework apps that teach vs. give answers

Reviewed 2026-10-15 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.

Every tool in this directory is marked teaches, gives answers, or mixed. “Teaches” means lessons, practice, or a tutor built so the child does the thinking. “Gives answers” means the main job is the solution. “Mixed” means a child can use it either way, or the company’s own pages describe both. A company saying “we don’t give the answer” is reported as their claim.

Built to make the child do the work

Khanmigo is the paid AI tutor. The parent page says it does not give the answer and instead helps a child think it through. That is Khan Academy’s design claim. A child can still try to push a chatbot, and replies can still be wrong. The free Khan Academy site is the lesson library, not that chatbot.

Synthesis Tutor describes a K–5 math tutor that adapts and responds when an answer is wrong. Ello listens while a child reads and helps with phonics. That is teaching a skill, not solving a worksheet. Ello’s current premium price was not on the pages we read.

Several products teach without being a chatbot at all: Zearn, Boddle, Prodigy, IXL, DreamBox Math, Beast Academy, Khan Academy Kids, Duolingo ABC, ABCmouse, SplashLearn, NoRedInk, and Quill. Quill and NoRedInk respond to a child’s own sentences. They do not turn in an essay.

The main job is the solution

Photomath scans a problem and shows a solution with steps. The steps can explain a method. The app still produces the answer. Mathway solves what you type or photograph. Its own pages disagree about how much of the written work is free, so check the checkout screen. Brainly is built around answers: posted answers, textbook solutions, step-by-step explanations, and a math solver on Plus. You must be at least 13 to create an account.

Mixed, because the same app can go either way

  • CK-12 Flexi is described as a tutor and also advertises snapping a photo for an instant solution.
  • Google Lens homework help points at explainers and step-by-step help. It can still be used to grab a solution. It replaced what the Socratic address used to offer.
  • DeltaMath is practice with worked explanations, not a camera. The explanations still show the solution. It is paid, and the first learner’s monthly price was not visible on the page we could read.
  • Grammarly suggestions can teach a child to revise. Full-sentence rewrites can also replace the child’s writing. Consumer accounts start at 13 in most of the U.S.
  • Quizlet flashcards are study. Plus also sells expert-written solutions, which are answers. Q-Chat, the AI tutor, was retired as of June 2025.

The homepage filter “Teaches vs. gives answers” uses these same labels. Pair this page with the house rules if you want a short list to say out loud before homework starts.
