A parent's house rules for AI and homework
Reviewed 2026-10-15 from the same public pages as the directory. If a tool page says a price or a privacy claim is unverified, this guide does not fill it in.
These are house rules you can say out loud. They follow how the apps in this directory work. They are not a study, and they are not a school’s policy.
- The child’s first stop is a tool marked “teaches.” That includes lesson apps such as Zearn, Khan Academy, and Boddle, and tutors such as Khanmigo or Synthesis Tutor if you have decided to pay. Khanmigo’s own page says it guides a child instead of handing over the answer. That is the company’s claim, and a chatbot can still be wrong.
- A camera or a solver is a parent tool, used after the child has tried. That matches how Photomath, Mathway, and Google Lens are filed here. Photomath and Mathway produce the solution. Lens can explain or be used to grab one.
- Do not create a Brainly account for a child under 13. Brainly says 13 is the minimum. The same line applies to consumer Grammarly: most U.S. accounts have to be at least 13, and a rewrite can replace the child’s own sentences. If the assignment is the child’s writing, the draft has to start in their words. Quill and NoRedInk practice those sentences instead of generating a paper.
- The parent holds the account when the product says so. Khanmigo sign-up is for adults 18 and older, and Khan Academy says parents can read chat history. IXL does not let a child under 13 create an account. Quizlet under-13 accounts need a parent’s email and a confirmation. Quizlet’s AI tutor, Q-Chat, is gone as of June 2025, so do not install Quizlet expecting a chatbot.
- Read the gap before you pay or before you trust a privacy badge. Epic Family’s current dollar price, Photomath Plus prices, Ello’s premium price, and several COPPA notes are unverified in this directory. The tool page says so on purpose. A paid Sponsored card, if one is running, is labeled and does not change those notes.
The labels behind rule 1 and rule 2 are explained in apps that teach vs. give answers. Age cutoffs are collected in is my kid old enough?
